The Golden Rule: treat others as you want to be treated. This benefits you because others will react to you as you act on them – what you do comes back to you even bigger.
The Platinum Rule: treat others as they want to be treated. As you put yourself in the shoes of your stakeholders, customers, or coworkers, trying on for size the experiences of that person, you appreciate what they’re going through, why they probably act as they do, what their expectations probably are, and how they probably want to be treated differently from what you want based on your experiences. This benefits you because others will be more willing to see the world through your eyes, and treat you as you want to be treated.
The Self-Governance Rule: don’t pretend to speak on behalf of others unless they say they want your help. Saying what someone else wants is often a way to blame others or distance yourself – you only know what you want.
