
To stop one person from being seen as representing their “group” – “the woman,” “the black guy,” “the M.B.A.” – bring in many people from that group at the same time.
Then to stop discrimination, people from different “groups” need to start working together in teams.
If there’s only one woman in your department, or only a few women managers in your big company, promote or bring in many women at the same time. Then for men to start working well with the women, they need to regularly work on teams together, where they each: learn what they each want from doing the work, share an ambitious vision, do work they want to do, share a timeline, regularly work together in the same space, do hands-on “heavy lifting,” and do what they can with what they have.
